Barcelona are exploring a January move for Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie as sporting director Deco assesses ways to strengthen the squad for the second half of the season.
The Catalan club are seeking a central defender to help them remain competitive in every competition, with Deco examining a number of possible targets. Hincapie, 24, has emerged as one of the players under consideration after struggling to secure the expected amount of playing time at Arsenal this season.
According to the Catalan newspaper Sport, fitness problems and strong competition for places in Arsenal’s defence have reduced the Ecuador international’s role under manager Mikel Arteta.
Hincapie joined Arsenal from Bayer Leverkusen but has found it difficult to establish a regular run in the team. He is not currently among Arteta’s preferred options, although his ability to contribute in more than one defensive position has attracted Barcelona’s attention.
The left-footed defender has international experience and can operate both at centre-back and left-back. That tactical flexibility is particularly valued by Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, who believes it could provide his team with additional defensive solutions during what is expected to be a demanding second half of the campaign.
Deco and Flick have both received highly positive reports about Hincapie. Barcelona’s sporting director has therefore made initial contact with the player’s representatives to establish whether he would be open to changing clubs and to explore the possibility of a move during the winter transfer window.
However, reaching an agreement is expected to be difficult. Although Hincapie is not currently a regular starter for Arsenal, Arteta is strongly opposed to allowing players to leave in January. The Arsenal manager is aware that his side still have a large number of matches to play and does not want to reduce his options while competing on several fronts.
Barcelona’s interest in Hincapie remains exploratory at this stage and forms part of Deco’s wider search for defensive reinforcements. Sky has also reported that the club have made enquiries about Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, who remains on the sporting department’s list of targets.
The approaches for Hincapie and Bastoni underline Barcelona’s efforts to assess the central-defender market before making a final decision. Any move will have to meet Flick’s sporting requirements while also taking account of the club’s financial limitations, making January an increasingly important part of Barcelona’s planning.
