Bayern Munich maintained their unbeaten start to the Champions League season with a convincing 2-0 win away to Atletico Madrid.
Lennart Karl recovered from a difficult first half to put the visitors ahead nine minutes after the interval. The 18-year-old stole in behind Robin le Normand, took the ball from the Atletico defender and calmly lifted it over goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Konrad Laimer added Bayern’s second with a powerful finish after being found in space by Harry Kane. The Austria midfielder struck the ball ferociously, sending it beyond Oblak and into the roof of the net.
Kane was unable to add to his own European record on an evening when he made his first Champions League appearance since winning the Ballon d’Or. The England captain had scored in each of his previous 10 appearances in the competition, but could not equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the longest Champions League scoring streak.
He sent an acrobatic effort wide before a low shot also missed the target, leaving him without a goal against the Spanish side.
Atletico had opportunities to respond, but Bayern controlled much of the match. Oblak produced an excellent save to divert a deflected Dayot Upamecano effort on to the crossbar.
Manuel Neuer was largely untroubled in the Bayern goal. The hosts managed only one shot on target throughout the match, underlining the visitors’ defensive control.
The result keeps Bayern Munich unbeaten in this season’s Champions League as they continue their campaign against Lille on Wednesday 25 November.
Atletico Madrid will also be in action on the same evening, when they face Norwegian champions Viking.
