Chelsea’s hopes of reaching the 2026-27 Carabao Cup quarter-finals ended in the most painful fashion as Liverpool beat them 6-5 on penalties at Anfield.
The round-of-16 tie finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, but Wesley Fofana missed Chelsea’s decisive spot-kick to send Liverpool through to the last eight.
Chelsea forward Morgan Rogers described the defeat as the “worst way” to lose after an even contest between the two sides.
Rogers continued his impressive start to life at Chelsea by opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 40th minute. However, Liverpool responded almost immediately, with Cody Gakpo converting a penalty three minutes later to level the match.
Neither side could find a winning goal before the game went to a shootout. Liverpool eventually prevailed when Fofana failed to convert, ending Chelsea’s involvement in the competition.
Rogers joined Chelsea from Aston Villa this off-season in a deal worth £117m. The England player has scored five goals and provided four assists in 11 appearances across all competitions, but was unable to celebrate his latest performance after Chelsea’s early Carabao Cup exit.
