Former Black Stars captain Andre “Dede” Ayew has challenged Ghana’s national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, to win the World Cup after visiting the squad at training in Accra.
Ayew met the players at Ajax Park at Legon on Tuesday, offering encouragement and financial support as they prepare to represent Ghana at the tournament in Mexico from 13–22 November 2026. The value of his donation was not officially disclosed.
“I’m here to support and give you all the love and power that I can give you, and to wish you great luck. I hope that you guys will bring us a medal, but the gold will be better,” Ayew told the team.
He also conveyed a message from his younger brother, Jordan Ayew, who is the current Black Stars captain.
“My younger brother Jordan says he’s also wishing you good luck,” he added.
Ayew then joined the players on the pitch, taking part in a penalty shootout against the team’s goalkeeper while using crutches. His participation underlined the determination of the squad and the importance of inclusion in sport.
Ghana have been placed in Group D for the World Cup alongside Angola, Colombia and Iraq. The tournament will be held in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico, with 24 national teams competing for the title.
The Black Challenge, who are the reigning African champions, are aiming to turn their continental success into a first world championship.
Growing support for Black Challenge
Ayew’s visit follows several financial contributions and pledges of support for the team ahead of the tournament.
Dancehall musician Stonebwoy donated GH¢100,000 after visiting the players last week. Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah also gave GH¢10,000, along with water and soft drinks.
Minister of Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku donated GH¢50,000 on behalf of his ministry. He additionally pledged poultry-business opportunities through the government’s ‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ programme for all 20 members of Ghana’s contingent.
The support has come as the team deals with logistical difficulties in its preparations. Visa-related delays have affected plans for a pre-tournament training camp in Turkiye.
Ayew’s intervention has added to calls for the government, corporate institutions and philanthropists to assist the Black Challenge as the team prepares to carry Ghana’s flag at the global competition in Mexico.
