China has stopped La Liga matches being broadcast across the country after Kylian Mbappe described former Chinese leader Mao Zedong as a “dictator” in comments about an internet meme.
The remark reportedly angered Chinese authorities and companies, who objected to the description of Mao, a figure who played a pivotal role in China’s history.

Mbappe has since issued an official apology to the Chinese people. He acknowledged that he had made a mistake and expressed regret for causing offence.
Real Madrid and La Liga have also apologised over the incident and urged a quick resolution in an effort to protect their relationship with China.
However, Chinese authorities reportedly believe the apology alone is not enough to settle the dispute over Mbappe’s comments.
Officials from Spain are understood to be in contact with their Chinese counterparts as they seek to resolve the situation. The dispute could affect La Liga’s commercial revenue and business partnerships in China.
The controversy followed a video published by The Bridge, in which Mbappe joked about an edited image showing him as Mao Zedong. Although he did not name Mao directly, he referred to the former leader as a “Chinese dictator”.
“My favourite Mbappe meme? The one where they put my face on a Chinese dictator (Mao Zedong). That really makes me laugh; I use it with my friends all the time,” he said.
