Paris Saint-Germain are waiting for further tests on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after the Georgia international suffered a worrying knee injury during Tuesday’s 4-2 Champions League victory over Barcelona.
The winger was forced to leave the field at the Parc des Princes after a heavy collision with Barcelona player Xavi Espart. Kvaratskhelia fell immediately and appeared to be in considerable pain, with images from the incident causing concern among those close to the player.
He was replaced in the 59th minute and was unable to put weight on the affected leg as he made his way off the pitch.
The initial indications have not been reassuring. Foot Mercato, citing L’Equipe, reported that the first examinations carried out after the match had raised serious concerns among people close to Kvaratskhelia. Those concerns include the possibility that he has suffered a cruciate ligament tear in his knee.
Several people close to the Georgia international expressed their fears about that scenario on Tuesday evening. However, no definitive diagnosis has yet been made, and Paris Saint-Germain are waiting for the results of additional medical checks before making an official announcement.
Kvaratskhelia is due to undergo an MRI scan on Wednesday. The examination is expected to establish the precise nature of the injury and provide a clearer indication of how long he may be unavailable.
A confirmed cruciate ligament injury would represent a major setback for Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique and his squad. Such an injury would keep Kvaratskhelia out for several months and could seriously threaten his involvement for the remainder of the season.
The uncertainty over the 24-year-old’s condition came despite Paris Saint-Germain securing a notable win over Barcelona in the Champions League. The French club must now wait for the scan before assessing the full impact of the injury on their campaign.
