Hansi Flick has rejected any sense of pessimism at Barcelona after their 4-2 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, insisting the result will not define the club’s ambitions for the season.
The German manager acknowledged that his side made mistakes against the French champions but said the performance also contained enough encouraging elements to justify an optimistic outlook. Flick’s message was aimed at those who may view the heavy defeat as evidence that Barcelona will struggle to compete for major honours this season.
“Titles are not decided in October. The Champions League will be decided in June,” Flick said, underlining his belief that an early-season loss cannot bring an end to the club’s hopes.
Speaking at his post-match news conference, the Barcelona manager said the team would need to assess the match carefully rather than focus solely on the final score.
“We have to analyse the game, but I saw some very good things and other things that we need to improve. I do not want to be negative; I am optimistic. It was a good experience, and we have to analyse what we can improve,” he said.
Barcelona led the match through different stages but lost some of their balance late on after the score moved to 3-2. That allowed Paris Saint-Germain to exploit the spaces on the pitch and extend their advantage to two goals.
The defeat has placed particular attention on Barcelona’s defensive organisation. Conceding four times means Flick must review the team’s positioning and the distances between players, areas that can prove costly against high-level opponents.
“We have to play with more calmness, improve our positioning and maintain our connections between the players. We must not leave big spaces between us, and we have to be clearer about what we want to do,” Flick added.
Despite the number of goals conceded, Flick praised Juan Garcia’s performance, saying the goalkeeper had made several important saves during the match. The manager also pointed to the chances Barcelona created, arguing that his players could have taken better advantage of those opportunities.
Barcelona now face a rapid opportunity to respond when they meet Real Madrid in the La Liga Clasico next Sunday. The fixture leaves Flick’s side with little time to dwell on the Champions League defeat and makes an immediate recovery essential.
