Thomas Christiansen has applied to become the next head coach of Ghana, with the Panama manager the latest candidate to express interest in the vacant Black Stars role.
GHANAsoccernet.com reports that the Danish-Spanish coach has submitted his application as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) considers candidates from both Ghana and abroad.
Christiansen has direct experience of facing Ghana, having taken charge of Panama against the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup. Panama were beaten 1-0 in that match, with the narrow scoreline reflecting a closely fought contest.
Ghana’s ability to secure victory at football’s biggest tournament could strengthen Christiansen’s case as the GFA assesses the applications. The 51-year-old has coaching experience in both domestic and international football and has developed a reputation for preparing organised, tactically adaptable teams.
A former Barcelona B player, Christiansen began building his managerial career in Cyprus, where he coached AEK Larnaca and APOEL Nicosia. He also managed Leeds United in the English Championship before taking charge of Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise from July 2019 to May 2020.
His work with Panama has since added international experience at the highest level. Those supporting his candidacy are expected to highlight his ability to build competitive sides, as well as his understanding of the pressures and demands associated with major tournaments.
Any appointment would have to take account of Christiansen’s existing responsibilities with Panama. It would also be subject to the GFA’s selection procedure.
Neither the GFA nor the Panamanian football federation had publicly commented on Christiansen’s application at the time of publication.
The Ghana position is regarded as one of the most prominent coaching vacancies in African football. The successful candidate will take over a Black Stars squad facing high expectations from supporters and a demanding programme of qualifiers and tournaments.
A five-member committee, made up of representatives from the GFA and the Ghanaian government, is expected to examine all applications before the next coach is announced.
