Ghana defender Gideon Mensah has identified the Black Stars’ 1-0 victory over Panama as the decisive moment of their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, saying the result convinced the team they could reach the knockout stages from a demanding group.
Ghana’s tournament in North America ended in the Round of 32, but Mensah said he was proud of the side’s overall performance. Otto Addo’s team also held England to a goalless draw and successfully progressed from the group stage.
The opening win against Panama was secured by a dramatic late goal from Caleb Yirenkyi. With Ghana needing a positive start to their campaign, Mensah believes that result gave the squad the confidence required to compete for qualification.
The Black Stars followed the victory with a disciplined display against England, earning a 0-0 draw, before losing narrowly to Croatia in their final group fixture.
Looking back on Ghana’s World Cup, Mensah said the Panama match remained the occasion that stood out most clearly.
> “I think we all enjoyed winning against Panama. Obviously, playing against England and getting a goalless draw against England was something good for the country, but we want to win every game,” he said.
> “Going into that game and then winning against Panama was one of the standout moments for me in the World Cup.”
The 28-year-old left-back said the victory did more than provide three points, arguing that it made Ghana’s route into the knockout phase feel realistic.
> “Qualifying from the group came to life because of the win against Panama. So I think that will be the standout moment for me in the World Cup.”
Ghana’s hopes of going further were eventually ended by a 1-0 defeat by Colombia in the Round of 32.
Mensah’s comments come as he begins a new phase of his club career following his move from French side AJ Auxerre to Bundesliga club FC Koln. He became an important player during his time at Auxerre, helping the club win promotion and building a reputation as one of their most consistent performers.
He has already started life in Germany positively, making his Bundesliga debut in Koln’s 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim. The newly promoted side opened their league campaign with that win at the RheinEnergieStadion.
Mensah is expected to feature again when FC Koln travel to Stuttgart this weekend.
After that fixture, his focus will return to Ghana duty as the Black Stars begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Ghana’s opening match will be away against Cote d’Ivoire, followed later this month by a home game against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Mensah is expected to play an important role in both of those matches as Ghana begin their bid to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations.
