Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says broken promises, an uncertain future and disagreements over recruitment left him disappointed and embarrassed during his time at Old Trafford.
Speaking to The Athletic, the Dutchman said the club sold Scott McTominay despite an agreement that the midfielder would not be allowed to leave.
Ten Hag also criticised Manchester United’s transfer strategy, claiming the club failed to secure priority targets and did not pursue some of the players he had identified.
Harry Kane, Declan Rice and Frenkie de Jong were among those linked with a move to United during Ten Hag’s tenure, although none joined the club.
The former manager was particularly frustrated by reports that Manchester United were considering replacing him before the 2024 FA Cup final.
He said speculation about his position intensified in the media while the club did not tell him what was happening, leaving him uncertain about whether he would remain in charge.
Manchester United ultimately changed their position after Ten Hag guided the side to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the final.
That result led to a one-year contract extension, with the club also giving Ten Hag assurances over his future.
Those assurances did not prevent another change in direction the following season. Manchester United made a poor start to the campaign and Ten Hag was dismissed in October 2024.
The club were 14th in the Premier League at the time, having collected 11 points from their opening nine games.
