Asante Kotoko won the 2026 Democracy Cup after beating rivals Hearts of Oak 4-1 in a penalty shootout at Baba Yara Stadium on Friday. The final ended goalless after 90 minutes, before goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim made the decisive contribution by saving two penalties.
The result gave Kotoko their second Democracy Cup title and added another significant moment to one of Ghanaian football’s most historic rivalries.
The match was the third edition of the annual fixture between Ghana’s two most successful clubs, and it lived up to expectations as a competitive and closely fought contest.
Kotoko began with greater urgency and put Hearts of Oak under immediate pressure. The Porcupine Warriors won three corners during the opening two minutes and controlled much of the early possession.
They appeared to have taken the lead in the 17th minute when new signing Emmanuel Marmah found the net. However, the goal was disallowed for offside, ending Kotoko’s celebrations and preserving the deadlock.
Hearts gradually settled into the contest and began to produce spells of composed passing. Kotoko still enjoyed more of the ball for large periods, but the Phobians became increasingly involved as the match progressed.
Neither team was able to make the breakthrough before half-time, and the second half followed a similar pattern of pressure without a goal.
Both sides created opportunities after the interval, but the two goalkeepers kept their teams level. Danlad made several important saves to prevent Hearts of Oak from scoring, while Benjamin Asare responded with a series of crucial interventions for Hearts.
Kotoko created what were arguably the better chances in the second half, but Asare’s performance ensured that their pressure did not lead to a winner.
With the score still 0-0 at the final whistle, the trophy was decided from the penalty spot.
Danlad again became the key figure for Kotoko, stopping two of Hearts of Oak’s penalties. Kotoko converted four of their own attempts to complete a 4-1 shootout victory and secure the trophy.
The success marks Kotoko’s second triumph in the Democracy Cup and provides another memorable chapter in their long-running rivalry with Hearts of Oak.
The Kumasi-based club will now represent Ghana in a mini-tournament in the United States as part of their reward for winning the competition. Organisers have yet to announce when that tournament will take place.
