South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, has expressed frustration over the uncertainty surrounding the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) hosting rights.
“If Morocco is ready to host the WAFCON because they had a brilliant AFCON, they should do so. If they are not ready, we want to tell them we have stadiums. We are not a country with less infrastructure,” McKenzie said.
McKenzie emphasized that South Africa is ready to host the tournament if Morocco is unable to.
“We will never be held hostage by countries that have less than what we have. If Morocco is not going to host it, South Africa is standing ready to host,” he added.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to provide an update on the situation within the next 48 hours.
Morocco was initially set to host the 16-team tournament from March 17 to April 3.
