Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is backing Nigeria to go all the way at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, confidently predicting that the team will lift the trophy in Morocco.
Speaking at the CAF Diaspora Tour event in London, the Fulham midfielder said the current squad under coach Éric Chelle has the quality, mentality and experience to finish the job after coming so close in 2023.
Iwobi reflected on Nigeria’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in the last AFCON final, insisting the only step forward is to win it.
“The last time at AFCON in Ivory Coast, we were really close. But the only way we can improve on that is to win it. We have the players to do it, we believe we can ; we just have to prove it.”
At 29, Iwobi is one of the Super Eagles’ most experienced players, with 91 caps and appearances in three AFCON tournaments since making his debut in 2015. He has been a consistent figure for Chelle and is expected to play a major leadership role when the tournament kicks off on December 21.
The midfielder also praised the CAF Diaspora Tour, which is being staged in London and Tokyo, saying it helps project African football’s culture, talent and entertainment value to global audiences. He described the huge London turnout as proof that “Europe appreciates what Africa can bring.”
Nigeria are three-time African champions and will be pushing for a fourth continental crown when the tournament ends on January 18, 2026.
