WAFCON 2024: Black Queens are not favourites to win – Coach Kim Bjorkegren

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren says Ghana is not considered a tournament favourite heading into the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), but insists his side could spring a surprise in Morocco.

The Swedish tactician, who took charge earlier this year after Nora Häuptle’s departure, believes the team has the potential to upset stronger opponents if they execute their strategy effectively.

“Ghana hasn’t won the title, and the last final was in 2006. So we’re not among the favourites,” he told CAFOnline.com.

“But I believe we can be a strong underdog. If we stick to the game plan and have a good day, we can beat any team.”

Bjorkegren, who is still laying the groundwork for his long-term vision, noted that several areas of the team require attention. His focus is on fitness, tactical discipline, and creating pathways for players to compete in more elite leagues.

“We still have work to do, both on and off the pitch. Tactically, we need to be more organised, and fitness levels must improve,” he said.

“One of our long-term goals is to get our top players competing in stronger leagues. We’ve had very limited training sessions so far, but with every camp, we grow stronger.”

Ghana has been drawn in Group C, where they will battle defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

The tournament begins on July 5 in Morocco, and the Black Queens will be seeking their first-ever continental title under new leadership.
