Unity Cup debutants give Otto Addo ‘headache’ ahead of World Cup qualifiers

FIFA High-Performance Specialist Faisal Chibsah says Ghana’s coaching staff now face tough decisions after several debutants impressed during the 2025 Unity Cup.

With senior players excused following various reasons, head coach Otto Addo gave opportunities to lesser-known talents in friendlies against Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago and a few seized the moment.

Chibsah called the tournament a rare but valuable chance to experiment, especially within the constraints of the FIFA calendar.

“It was exciting to see many new faces. The calendar and FIFA window don’t usually give coaches a chance to try new players they haven’t worked with,” Chibsah said in an interview with JoySports.

“This was the right time to give the regulars a break and test others.”

“Clearly, some have made arguments for themselves. It’s going to be a headache for the coach going into the September qualifiers,” he added.

Ghana will reconvene later this year as they resume their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, with key selection decisions looming for the technical team.
