Ghana’s Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals Nigeria in their opener of the 2025 Unity Cup, hosted in London, England.
It was a jittery start for the Black Stars, as Razak Simpson’s poor control allowed Nigeria to launch an early attack and nearly won a penalty.
Things went from bad to worse for the centre-back when his failed clearance allowed Cyriel Dessers to pounce and slot home, giving Nigeria a 14th-minute lead.
Just five minutes later, Semi Ajayi rose highest to meet a cross, and his header deflected off Ghana defender Simpson for the Super Eagles’ second goal.
Christopher Bonsu forced a save from Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, which was the Black Stars’ only meaningful effort in the first 45 minutes.
The narrative changed in the second half with Ghana predominantly on the ascendancy.
Bonsu left footed effort was saved by Nwabali before Captain Jordan Ayew missed a chance to poke home following a good delivery by Bonsu.
Ghana finally got their reward through a well-worked goal finished off by Thomas-Asante, to reduce the deficit.
Nwabali was on top of his game, making crucial saves to ultimately keep the scoreline 2-1 in favor of Nigeria.
The Super Eagles will face Jamaica in the final on Saturday while the Black Stars take on Trinidad and Tobago for a third place finish.
