Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto has pledged to lead the University of Cape Coast (UCC) through a programme centred on transparency, innovation and research excellence as he seeks to secure the institution’s sustainable growth and strengthen its international standing.
Professor Aheto was formally invested as UCC’s 12th Vice-Chancellor at a ceremony held on Saturday, 1 August, at the New Examination Centre in Cape Coast.
The event was attended by government officials, traditional leaders, academics, students, alumni and other stakeholders.
In his inaugural address, Professor Aheto presented his 2026–2030 Strategic Vision, which he said would provide the framework for the university’s recovery, progress and long-term development.
“We will run the University as a business, while maintaining focus on its strong academic and research traditions,” he said.
He said the administration would place transparency, accountability and measurable performance at the centre of its work.
“Transparency, accountability and a results-driven approach, grounded on a robust monitoring and evaluation framework, will underpin every phase of execution,” he added.
Professor Aheto said his ambition was to develop a transformative, inclusive and diverse academic environment in which teaching, research, learning and engagement with communities could flourish.
His plans include a focus on sustainable financing and resource mobilisation, stronger institutional governance, staff welfare and human resource development.
Research excellence, the expansion of academic programmes, knowledge transfer, entrepreneurship and the use of digital technology to improve teaching and learning were also identified as priorities.
Although he described these as five key priority areas for his administration, the plan incorporates a broad range of measures intended to improve the university’s academic, financial and operational performance.
The Vice-Chancellor also set out proposals to deepen UCC’s links with industry and secure more research funding from government, the private sector and development partners.
He said the university would work to produce graduates with a global outlook who could support innovation and contribute to national development.
A review of UCC’s existing Corporate Strategic Plan will begin under his leadership. The current plan expires in 2027, and the review is intended to align it with his vision before a new strategic framework for the 2028–2032 period is developed.
The announcement forms part of Professor Aheto’s wider effort to reposition UCC as an institution capable of competing more effectively internationally while maintaining its established academic and research traditions.
Professor Aheto is an environmental scientist and fisheries expert. He joined UCC as a lecturer in 2009 and has since held a number of senior roles at the university.
His previous positions include Head of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, founding Director of the Centre for Coastal Management, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Acting Vice-Chancellor.
He was appointed substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast on 15 May 2026.
