Top 5 Leagues to Watch During the International Break

301

The international break is here and whether you love it or hate it, we still have some club action to look forward to. We’ll run through the best leagues to keep an eye on during the international fixtures with the top five leagues across Europe set to resume next week.

League One

League One is arguably the best league to watch this week with the international break stopping most top flight action. It may be the third tier in English football, but with the likes of Sunderland only narrowly escaping League One last season after five seasons, it goes to show how competitive it does get.

Teams like Peterborough United, Derby County and Wycombe Wanderers are all vying for a spot back in the Championship, and there are eight games going ahead this weekend with a few postponed because of the international fixtures. In fact, there are many stars in League One who regularly get called up to national team duty.

League Two

One division below League One is League Two in England. All 12 fixtures are going ahead in this one.

English National League

The non-league realms of English football is always one of the most intriguing areas of UK football with 24 clubs battling it out to see who can turn professional the following season. Chesterfield are currently top of the division and sit ahead of Wrexham by one point after nine games.

There are 12 games set to take place this Saturday afternoon in England, and with the National League being split into two more divisions (National League South and National League North), there are 24 more fixtures going down in non-league English football too.

Spanish Segunda

Stepping away from the English football action and we have weeks worth of fixtures in Spain’s second tier. Sporting Gijon will take on Ibiza on Friday night, with massive games taking place involving Las Palmas vs. Granada and Brugos vs. Levante.

Deportivo Alaves are leading the way at the top of the division, while Las Palmas, Granada and FC Cartagena are all level on 12 points in the race to get back in La Liga. It has so far been a thrilling Segunda Division season in 2022/23.

Northern Ireland Premiership

The Northern Ireland Premiership is one of the few leagues across Europe that is set to carry on in some capacity during the international break. In fact, with the MLS usually going ahead during international breaks and now halting for this week, the NIFL Premiership is the only notable top flight league to be aware of this week.
