‘Thank you Mourinho for believing in me’ – Cremonese-bound Felix Afena-Gyan bids farewell to AS Roma –

Felix Afena-Gyan has bid farewell to AS Roma as he nears a permanent move to Cremonese.

The young Ghana striker, who arrived in Rome in March 2021, has agreed to join the Serie A newcomers in a reported 9 million euros transfer.

In a statement posted on social media, Afena-Gyan expressed gratitude to the club, teammates, and, most importantly, Jose Mourinho for believing in him.

Afena-Gyan also thanked Alberto De Rossi, the manager of Roma’s Primavera squad, for his contribution to his development.

“I’m grateful to AS Roma, the technical team and staff for the precious opportunity and support I have enjoyed in the last one and half years,” the 19-year-old’s farewell message read.

“My utmost love to the manager Jose Mourinho. The last seven months with you has totally changed my life. Thank you for believing in me.”

“To my former teammates and Roma fans, I cherish the wonderful moments we shared together.”

“Thank you, Mr Alberto De Rossi [manager of Roma’s Primavera squad] for the role you’ve played in my growth.”

“It was a huge honour to put on the Roma shirt.”

Cremonese would pay Roma 6 million euros plus 3 million euros in add-ons.

Several clubs expressed interest in the 19-year-old but Cremonese have won the race and are preparing to announce Afena-Gyan as their new player.

The impending departure of Afena-Gyan is surprising given that he signed a long-term contract with Roma earlier in the transfer window. He agreed to stay until 2026.

He was expected to leave the club on loan, with Roma intending to replace him with an experienced forward, but the club have decided to sell him.

Afena-Gyan started last season with U-19 team but got promoted to the first team afer impressing manager Jose Mourinho.

He made his debut against Cagliari in Serie A in November 2022, before scoring his first two goals in the victory over Genoa.
