The 2nd leg of Sturm Graz and Dynamo Kyiv’s Champions League 3rd-qualifying round tie will take place in Austria on Tuesday at the Merkur Arena with the hosts looking to overhaul a 1-0 deficit from last week’s 1st leg defeat at Dynamo Kiev.

The Austrian Bundesliga’s 2nd-placed team earned a 3rd-round entry into this season’s Champions League qualifying, hoping to reach the group stage for the first time since 2000-01 but they need a positive result on Tuesday night if they’re to achieve this goal.

In their third league match of the new domestic Austrian season, Christian Ilzer’s side played Ried away from home on Saturday in order to bounce back from a defeat and build confidence for this upcoming home match, but they were held to a slightly disappointing 1-1 draw on the road.

It’s now been three league games without a loss for Sturm Graz, but Ilzer’s team will still know they have every chance of reaching the Champions League playoff round going into their home leg, where they hope to overcome the deficit in Graz and get off to a strong start at their Merkur Arena with what is likely to be an unchanged team from the weekend.

Dynamo Kiev haven’t played competitive football in recent months due to the suspension of the Ukrainian top flight, but a packed schedule of friendlies in June and July paved the way for a 2nd round qualifying tie against Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

After a goalless first leg in Poland, Dynamo Kiev looked set to advance with a 1-0 victory thanks to Vitaliy Buyalskyi’s 57th-minute strike. However, Attila Szalai equalised in the dying minutes to force extra time and a tense finale.

A goal from Oleksandr Karavaev in the extra period sealed the victory for Mircea Lucescu’s side though and Dynamo Kiev are now just 90 minutes away from sealing a place in the play-off round of this season’s Champions League, knowing just a draw in Graz would be enough to send the Ukrainian side through.

Dynamo Kiev’s squad has also had the luxury of being able to rotate in league and cup games in recent months, so Dynamo Kiev will not make many changes either for this upcoming crucial 2nd leg tie.

Goals look set to be at a premium then for this return leg.
