Stade de Reims have reached an agreement to sign Mali Under-17 international Seydou Dembele, beating competition from several of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United and Barcelona.
The 18-year-old is set to sign the first professional contract of his career with the French club, according to Foot Mercato. Dembele was reportedly persuaded by Stade de Reims’ strategy of identifying talented young players, developing them carefully and providing a gradual route into the first team.
His decision brings to an end a transfer race that had threatened to take him directly to one of the continent’s footballing giants, with Barcelona previously regarded as the leading contender for his signature.
Dembele established himself as one of the most highly rated emerging talents in African football during the 2025 Under-17 World Cup in Qatar. Representing Mali, he scored twice and supplied four assists in five matches, finishing as the tournament’s leading goalscorer and attracting the attention of scouts from clubs across Europe.
His performances in Qatar followed another standout achievement at youth level. Dembele was named the best player at the West Africa Under-17 Championship for Zone A, held in Senegal, further underlining his status as one of the continent’s most closely watched young footballers.
The left-footed player developed his skills at the well-known GMG Academy in Bamako, founded by Frenchman Jean-Marc Guio. The academy helped refine his technical ability, close control and creative approach to the game.
Dembele is noted for his vision, confidence in one-on-one situations and ability to deliver set-pieces. He is also recognised for his passing in tight areas, qualities that have made him an attractive prospect in the European youth market.
That profile led to strong interest from a number of clubs. Chelsea submitted a formal offer for the player, while Manchester United, Red Bull Salzburg and Fenerbahce also expressed an interest in the Mali international.
Barcelona had appeared to move into pole position at an earlier stage of the negotiations. However, Stade de Reims changed the course of the transfer by presenting Dembele with a clearer sporting plan suited to his age and current stage of development.
The French club’s proposal would allow him to continue progressing without the pressure of making an immediate move into the spotlight at one of Europe’s biggest teams. That approach ultimately helped convince Dembele and his representatives that Stade de Reims was the right destination, rather than joining a major European club straight away.
The agreement represents a significant coup for Stade de Reims, whose focus on nurturing young talent has enabled them to compete with clubs possessing considerably greater resources and global profiles. Dembele’s arrival will now give the France-based side the opportunity to continue developing one of Mali’s most promising players.
