South Africa secured their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup after a determined 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso.
The result keeps the 2022 champions in the tournament and moves them to four points in Group B. It also means South Africa will face hosts Morocco in the last eight, after Morocco finished top of Group A.
South Africa approached the match knowing they needed a major performance to preserve their position in the competition. They immediately took control, pressing Burkina Faso back and spending the early stages of the game in the opposition half.
That pressure produced the decisive moment in the 21st minute. Fikile Magama played forward Kgatlana through on goal, creating the opening South Africa had been searching for.
The experienced attacker made no mistake with her first-time finish, striking from close range to give Banyana Banyana the lead.
Burkina Faso tried to respond after falling behind and looked for a way back into the contest. South Africa, however, defended their advantage effectively and resisted the attempts to force an equaliser.
The result was a significant response from the South Africans following a difficult beginning to their Group B campaign. They had lost their opening match to Malawi before drawing with Ivory Coast, leaving them in need of a positive result against Burkina Faso.
Instead, they delivered the win required to continue their campaign. The narrow margin meant the closing stages remained competitive, but South Africa held on to complete the job and advance to the knockout phase.
Their reward is a quarter-final against Morocco, who topped Group A and will now meet the reigning 2022 champions in the last eight. The fixture gives South Africa the chance to continue their pursuit of another deep run in the Women’s Africa Cup after overcoming Burkina Faso.
For Burkina Faso, the defeat ended their hopes of progressing beyond the group-stage battle for qualification. South Africa’s early attacking intent, followed by their ability to protect Kgatlana’s goal, proved enough to settle the contest.
The victory leaves South Africa with four points from their Group B matches and confirms their place among the final eight teams. Their next challenge will be against Morocco, with the hosts awaiting them in the quarter-finals.
