Members of Zebi & Friends, a group of retired footballers, have taken part in a comprehensive health screening exercise designed to encourage preventive healthcare and healthier living.

The initiative was held on Saturday, 22 August, near Osu Oxfords Street and was organised in partnership with Health Enhancement and Access Link (HEAL).

About 25 members of the group participated, with a medical team from HEAL guiding them through a range of assessments and laboratory investigations.

The screening included tests for blood sugar using HbA1c, cholesterol through a lipid profile, kidney function, liver function and full blood count. Participants were also offered prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests.

Organisers said the laboratory services were made available at discounted prices under the partnership with HEAL. The arrangement enabled members to undergo important medical checks at a reduced cost.

The exercise also combined testing with health education. Members were advised on the value of attending regular medical examinations and making lifestyle choices that can support their long-term wellbeing.

The medical team placed particular emphasis on diet and general lifestyle, telling the retired footballers that nutritional and health requirements need increased attention as people grow older.

Participants were encouraged to maintain healthy eating habits and seek medical advice regularly. Early examinations, the organisers said, can help identify potential health conditions and support their management at an earlier stage.

The event highlights the increasing importance of preventive healthcare for retired sportsmen. Although many former footballers continue to lead physically active lives, they may also face health challenges linked to ageing.

Zebi & Friends’ leadership thanked HEAL for supporting the initiative and providing both the screening services and health education.

The group described the exercise as an important measure in helping protect the wellbeing of its members. It also provided an opportunity for the retired footballers to gain a clearer understanding of the health checks available to them and the lifestyle measures that can contribute to healthy ageing.

The screening formed part of the group’s efforts to promote greater awareness of personal health among its members. Through the partnership, participants were able to access a broad selection of laboratory tests while receiving guidance on the importance of monitoring their condition regularly.

For the former players, the exercise combined practical medical support with advice intended to help them make informed decisions about their diet, routine and ongoing healthcare needs.
