Real Madrid’s Mbappe and Vinicius partnership has yet to match their individual brilliance

A report has questioned the attacking relationship between Real Madrid forwards Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, with the pair still short of the level of understanding expected after two seasons together at the club.

The Brazil and France internationals are regarded as Real Madrid’s leading stars and two of their most dangerous attacking weapons. However, Marca says their partnership has not consistently developed into a collective threat, despite the exceptional individual ability of both players.

Real Madrid have played 125 matches since Mbappe and Vinicius first appeared together, in the European Super Cup against Atalanta on 14 August 2024. The two forwards have featured alongside each other in 89 of those games.

Across those matches, Real Madrid scored 192 goals, but only 19 were the result of a direct combination between Mbappe and Vinicius. That represents 9.8% of the team’s goals while the pair have been on the pitch together.

Since Mbappe joined Real Madrid, the club have scored 269 goals in total, a figure which further highlights how limited the direct output of the partnership has been compared with the expectation surrounding two of the world’s most prominent attackers.

The balance of their combination has also favoured Vinicius when it comes to creating goals for his team-mate. According to Marca, the Brazilian has been the player who most often began moves that ended with Mbappe scoring.

Of the 15 direct contributions started by Vinicius and finished by Mbappe, three came from penalties won by the Brazilian winger. The figures suggest Vinicius has generally been the provider, while Mbappe has more often supplied the finishing touch.

That pattern became less productive last season. The number of goals created directly by the pair fell to nine, with seven involving an attacking contribution from Vinicius and only two beginning with Mbappe.

Their opening competitive match of the 2026-27 season offered no immediate sign of an improvement. Neither player was directly involved in a goal, while both produced performances below expectations.

Vinicius came in for particular criticism after struggling to make an impact against the opposition’s organised defensive structure. He was unable to display the individual quality and dribbling ability that have become central to his reputation.

The issue is now one of the most important challenges facing Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid’s new manager. The report says Mourinho must find a way to turn the individual strengths of Mbappe and Vinicius into a more effective collective attacking force.

After two seasons operating together, the task for Mourinho is to establish a system that allows the forwards to complement one another and produce the level of chemistry Real Madrid expect. Otherwise, the club may continue to rely primarily on the separate threat created by each player rather than the combined power of its two leading attackers.
