Reigning Ghana Premier League champions Bibiani GoldStars have appointed Greek coach Petros Koukouras as head coach as they bid to retain their title in the 2026-27 season.
The 37-year-old replaces Swiss tactician Fritz Markus Schmid, who left earlier this month after overseeing the second half of GoldStars’ historic 2025-26 championship-winning campaign.
The club is banking on Koukouras’ broad African experience and modern coaching methods to sustain its rapid rise and mount a strong title defence.
Rising Greek coach with African pedigree
Koukouras, who holds a UEFA A Licence, has built a reputation as one of the most progressive young coaches working on the continent.
He first worked in East Africa with Uganda’s Pacific Heroes FC, before joining the South Sudan national team as an assistant coach. He then returned to Uganda to take charge of giants SC Villa Jogoo, one of the country’s most prominent and historically successful clubs.
A subsequent spell with Rwandan side Kiyovu Sports further strengthened his profile, with the Greek coach noted for his tactical organisation, pressing game and detailed match preparation.
Across these roles, Koukouras has often been praised for blending discipline with a modern, possession-based approach and a strong emphasis on developing younger players.
GoldStars target stability after title breakthrough
Bibiani GoldStars’ decision to move swiftly for Koukouras follows a period of upheaval in the dugout despite on-pitch success.
Schmid, who arrived midway through last season, steered the Miners through a decisive title run-in before departing soon after securing the league crown.
Club officials believe Koukouras’ track record in African football, combined with his coaching qualifications, makes him well placed to provide stability and a clear long-term direction.
GoldStars see his appointment as an opportunity to consolidate their domestic success, refine their playing identity and build a squad capable of competing at the top of the Ghanaian game for several seasons.

Koukouras is widely recognised for his commitment to youth development, often promoting and trusting young talents in senior squads.
