Ghana’s 2026-27 Premier League season will kick off in early September and wrap up at the end of May, as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) pushes through a revamped calendar designed to mirror FIFA’s global schedule and sharpen the league’s competitiveness.
Under the officially approved timetable, the new top-flight campaign will start over the weekend of 4–7 September 2026 and run until 28–31 May 2027.
The GFA says the move is part of a broader strategy to bring Ghana’s domestic football in line with the FIFA calendar for member associations, while also improving planning, operational efficiency and the overall quality of the competition.
Longer runway for clubs after GFA Congress
Following the GFA Congress scheduled for 20 August 2026, clubs will be granted a clear window to finalise pre-season training and logistics ahead of the opening round of fixtures in September.
As with the most recent campaign, the bulk of league games are expected to be played at weekends, with midweek dates mainly held back for rearranged or outstanding matches. The association believes this structure will help broadcasters, match organisers and supporters plan more effectively across the nine-month season.
Medeama SC begin title defence
Reigning champions Medeama SC will be the central focus as the new season starts, launching their bid to hold on to the Ghana Premier League crown.
The Tarkwa-based side, who clinched the title last term, are expected to face fierce resistance from established rivals and ambitious newcomers alike as clubs across the country brace for what is expected to be another tightly contested campaign.
The GFA hopes that the clearer, FIFA-aligned calendar will not only assist Medeama and other Ghanaian clubs in managing domestic commitments, but also better position them for continental competitions organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Three promoted clubs step into the spotlight
The 2026-27 season will introduce three freshly promoted teams to the top division: Debibi United, FC AshantiGold 04 and Port City FC.
All three secured their places in the Premier League via the Division One League and will now test themselves against Ghana’s elite for the first time. Their arrival adds new narratives, regional rivalries and fan bases to a league that continues to expand its reach and profile.
Promoted sides have often disrupted expectations in previous seasons, and the performances of Debibi United, FC AshantiGold 04 and Port City FC will be closely followed by supporters and analysts.
GFA targets ‘well-organised and exciting’ campaign
In unveiling the calendar, the GFA stressed its intention to deliver a more professional and attractive product for all stakeholders.
The association says it remains committed to ensuring a “well-organised and exciting season” for clubs, players, match officials, commercial partners and fans, as Ghana’s top tier seeks to strengthen its reputation both domestically and internationally.
By locking in a season that runs from early September to late May, the GFA is banking on greater stability, improved scheduling and better alignment with global football to drive the continued growth of the Ghana Premier League.
