Opoku Nti attributes Ghana’s AFCON drought to neglect of football legends

Former Black Stars captain Opoku Nti has expressed his disappointment with Ghana’s neglect of its football heroes, suggesting this has contributed to the national team’s inability to win AFCON trophy.

Nti, a member of the 1982 AFCON-winning squad, believes broken promises made to players have discouraged many from representing Ghana.

In an interview with Joy Sports, Nti revealed that the lack of appreciation shown to the 1982 winning squad led to a poor performance in the 1984 AFCON.

“If Ghana is suffering maybe some players cursed Ghana, I don’t know, but this thing got so many players to decide not to play for the nation again because the sacrifice was too much,”

“It’s all gone now, but you see, it didn’t augur well so from there defending the Cup at Bouake, we were eliminated because no one was willing to sacrifice again. Who wants to die again for the nation? They said a nation that does not honour its heroes is not worth dying for.” he added

Ghana’s AFCON title drought has now stretched to four decades, with recent performances being disappointing after back-to-back Afcon exits.
