NSA awaits funds to complete closed stand at Accra Sports Stadium – Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, says the institution is still waiting for government funds to complete renovations on the closed Independence Stand at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The stand was initially shut down in March ahead of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup Qualifier against Chad due to safety concerns. Although fans were eventually allowed to use it during the match, the section has since remained closed.

“There are challenges we must address,” Ampofo Ankrah told Joy Sports. “We’re still waiting for the release of funds to complete the stand so it can return to full capacity.”

He also hinted at broader issues facing the stadium’s long-term maintenance, revealing that contracts for certain upgrades were awarded prior to the new administration but audits on those works are still pending.

“My team and I have assessed the situation, and honestly, it’s not looking good,” he added. “We’re awaiting the official report from the Ministry to determine what was done and what still needs to be completed.”

With Ghana set to resume their World Cup Qualifiers in September, the NSA will be hoping the stand is ready in time should the Accra Sports Stadium be confirmed as the venue.
