NFF rules out immediate contract extension for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has dismissed speculation surrounding an early contract extension for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, despite the team’s impressive performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Chelle, who was appointed in January 2025, endured a difficult start to his tenure but successfully steadied the Super Eagles, guiding them to a third-place finish at the continental tournament.

The Malian tactician’s turnaround and strong AFCON showing have fueled discussions about his long-term future with the three-time African champions. However, Gusau insists there is no urgency from the federation to renegotiate Chelle’s contract.

Speaking in an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, the NFF president made the federation’s position clear.

“There will be no contract extension discussion with Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles head coach, for now,” Gusau said.

“We signed a two-year deal with him in January 2025. He is only halfway through his contract. In the last six months of his current deal, we can start to look at things.”

Chelle’s growing reputation has not gone unnoticed across the continent. Reports suggest that both Angola and Gabon are closely monitoring his situation, although the NFF maintains its focus remains on continuity and stability.

For now, the federation appears content to allow Chelle to continue his work under the existing agreement as Nigeria builds toward its next competitive assignments.
