Hubert Gyau, Asante Kotoko’s latest midfield recruit, has issued a public apology after comments he made during an interview drew criticism from sections of the club’s fanbase.
The 23-year-old, who joined the Porcupine Warriors on a four-year deal from Berekum Chelsea, had suggested that his time at Kotoko might be short-lived as he hoped to move abroad after just one season.
The remark, widely shared on social media, sparked concerns about his long-term commitment to the club.
In response to the backlash, Gyau appeared on the AllSportsGh Xtra YouTube channel to clarify his comments and express remorse.
“I want to sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding caused by my earlier statements,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for this club and its supporters. My focus is on giving everything for Kotoko during my time here, and I’m excited to wear this jersey with pride.”
Though Asante Kotoko has not commented publicly on the matter, Gyau’s swift apology may help calm tensions as preseason preparations begin.
Gyau’s path to Kotoko has been steady and hard-earned. He began his career with Kintampo FC, moved through Unity FC in Ahafo Kenyasi, and gained valuable experience at Nkoranza Warriors (later renamed Berekum City) before landing at Berekum Chelsea, where he impressed enough to earn his move to Kumasi.
Now wearing Kotoko’s iconic red, Gyau says he’s eager to turn the page. “This is a big step in my career,” he said. “I’m here to work hard, stay humble, and prove that I belong.”
