Medeama SC began the new season with silverware after defeating Nations FC 2-0 to win the 2026 Champion of Champions at TNA Park in Tarkwa.
The result gives the Ghana Premier League champions an early boost before a demanding campaign that will include continental competition. Medeama SC controlled much of the contest and secured the trophy through goals from Fatawu Sulemana and former Nations FC player Emmanuel Annor.
The hosts took the lead in the 28th minute after Nations FC were penalised for handball inside the penalty area. Fatawu Sulemana took responsibility from the spot and converted the penalty to put Medeama SC in front.
Nations FC were unable to find a response before half-time, while Medeama SC continued to dictate the match after the interval. Their pressure eventually produced a second goal when Emmanuel Annor, who previously played for Nations FC, finished confidently to establish a two-goal advantage.
That was enough to settle the contest and hand the Yellow and Mauve their first piece of silverware ahead of the 2026-27 Ghana Premier League season, which begins this weekend.
The Champion of Champions is the traditional curtain-raiser for Ghana’s top-flight campaign, bringing together the league champions and the FA Cup holders. This year’s meeting at TNA Park provided an early indication of the challenges facing both clubs as they prepare for domestic and African football.
Medeama SC will now turn their attention to the CAF Champions League. They are due to host TP Mazembe of DR Congo in the first leg of their preliminary-round tie on 6 September.
Nations FC, the FA Cup holders, also begin their continental campaign this week. They will travel to Mali to play Diarra FC in the opening leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round tie on 5 September.
The two clubs therefore leave the Champion of Champions with different immediate tasks, but both have African competition to prepare for before the domestic season gets under way.
For Medeama SC, the victory provides a positive start and a trophy to show for their opening fixture of the new campaign. Nations FC must now regroup quickly before their trip to Mali, with the CAF Confederation Cup tie offering an opportunity to respond to their defeat in Tarkwa.
