Ghanaian clubs Medeama Sporting Club and Nations FC will learn their opponents in the preliminary rounds of the 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup on Thursday, 6 August 2026.
The draw will take place at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, with clubs from across the continent set to be paired for the opening stage of Africa’s two leading interclub tournaments.
Medeama Sporting Club will enter the Champions League after being crowned 2025/26 Ghana Premier League champions. Nations FC, meanwhile, earned Ghana’s place in the Confederation Cup by winning the FA Cup.
The two clubs will be hoping to avoid difficult assignments as they prepare to represent Ghana in continental competition. Their preliminary-round ties will be the first step in attempts to reach the group stages of their respective tournaments.
Medeama Sporting Club’s qualification comes after its success in Ghana’s top-flight league, securing the opportunity to compete in the continent’s premier club competition. Nations FC will begin its Confederation Cup campaign after claiming the country’s domestic cup, giving the club a route into African football alongside the league champions.
The TotalEnergies CAF Champions League remains the most prestigious club competition in Africa. The team that eventually wins the tournament will receive USD 6 million in prize money.
The winners of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup will earn USD 4 million. The competition provides another route to continental success for clubs that qualify through their domestic cup competitions and other national qualification places.
CAF has also brought in a solidarity payment scheme for teams eliminated during the preliminary rounds. Each club affected will receive USD 100,000, part of a wider effort to support participating sides and strengthen its interclub competitions.
The financial measure will apply to clubs whose campaigns end before the group stages, ensuring that teams involved in the opening rounds receive support even if they do not progress further in the tournament.
The preliminary stages of CAF’s competitions have produced a number of highly competitive ties in recent seasons. They have regularly brought established continental powerhouses up against emerging clubs aiming to establish themselves on the African football stage.
Medeama Sporting Club and Nations FC must now wait for the outcome of the Cairo draw before their opponents are confirmed. The announcement will allow both Ghanaian representatives to finalise preparations for their respective 2026/27 continental campaigns.
The Champions League and Confederation Cup remain the principal club competitions organised by CAF, and both clubs will be seeking favourable pairings when the preliminary-round fixtures are drawn on 6 August.
