Marseille to claim vital victory over Strasbourg

This Saturday sees another French top flight season winding up in this final matchday on Saturday and features the upcoming top of the table Ligue 1 clash between 3rd placed Marseille and 5th placed Strasbourg at the Stade Orange Vélodrome with both teams pushing their respective European ambitions.

Marseille currently sit level on 68 points apiece with 2nd placed Monaco who occupy the last automatic Champions League spot and whom also hold a slightly superior goal difference of +4 but Monaco have to travel to Lens in this weekend’s final round of matches.

Although Marseille have suffered the odd hiccup in recent times, losing to PSG, Lyon and Rennes, two of these three defeats were inflicted upon them away from home.

The hosts have also picked up seven wins out of their last 10 matches overall, and it’s been this sort of form which have helped maintain Marseille’s push for a Champions League spot for next season.

Marseille have also won three of their last four games at home, recording victories over Nice, Montpellier and Nantes.

Strasbourg also need all three points in Saturday’s outing to the Stade Orange Vélodrome as the visitors seek to confirm a top five finish in Ligue 1 and indeed, they could even jump into 4th spot if Rennes slip up away from home at Lille this weekend.

The visitors have produced a solid sequence of results since early February as Strasbourg have lost just once in their last 15 matches overall, picking up seven wins, drawing seven and suffering the one loss which was a 1-0 defeat away from home at Lille.

However, break down Strasbourg’s results during this period and you’ll find that five of their seven wins in this period were collected on home soil at their Stade de la Meinau while away from home, the pickings have been rather slim of late.

Strasbourg have claimed just one win from their last six outings on their travels which came in the form of a 1-0 win at mid-table Brest.

But the visitors have been held back by four draws and a defeat as well, so there’s no guarantees of success for Strasbourg this Saturday.

Marseille are unbeaten in their last six meetings against Strasbourg (winning four of these games), so the hosts look to hold the edge going into this final encounter.
