Manchester City vs Liverpool – Insight into matchday No 29

553

Manchester City and Liverpool will meet for the fourth time this season in all competitions on Saturday at lunchtime. When the Premier League season kicked off, April’s Man City and Liverpool fixture would have been seen as a title decider.

Unfortunately, Liverpool are just hoping to finish in the top four. Manchester City, on the other hand, are battling Arsenal for the title.

Man City start the weekend eight points behind first-place Arsenal. The Cityzens have a game in hand but some difficult fixtures on the horizon.

Liverpool are sixth and seven points off fourth-place Tottenham. The Reds have nothing to play for this season except the final Champions League qualification place.

Manchester City vs Liverpool: Head-to-Head

Although Manchester City won 3-2 against Liverpool in a December Carabao Cup match-up, the Reds have a strong head-to-head record against the Sky Blues in recent meetings.

Liverpool are unbeaten in five of their last six matches against City. However, the Reds have been dreadful on the road this season, with a record of 3W-3D-7L. Liverpool are unpredictable away from Anfield.

Man City have the second-best home points total in the league (34). They won each of their last four home matches in the Premier League. No team has scored more home goals than City’s 43. Liverpool are –7 in goal difference away from Anfield.

Pep Guardiola vs Jurgen Klopp

Guardiola faced Liverpool 19 times previously, posting a record of 6W-5D-8L. He managed 27 times against Liverpool in his career. Guardiola has a losing record against the Reds, with 10W-5D-12L.

Klopp can certainly get Liverpool up for the big games. The Reds defeated City 1-0 at Anfield and Man United 7-0 earlier this season. It is the road that is the problem.

Klopp has a record of 11W-6D-7L against City. If Liverpool’s big stars of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are up for the match, Liverpool will make it a close game.

Top goal scorers in Manchester City vs Liverpool fixtures

  • Ian Rush (LFC) – 15 goals
  • Kenny Dalglish (LFC) – 11 goals
  • Mohamed Salah (LFC) – 10 goals
  • Sadio Mane (LFC) – 7 goals

Saturday’s game is an early start for both clubs following the international break. Liverpool have been Jekyll and Hyde this season. At Anfield, they were fantastic, but on the road, Liverpool struggled to reach the same performances.

City will want to lay down a marker in the title race with a win over Liverpool. Arsenal won’t play until 3 pm, and a win against the Reds could put fear into the minds of the Gunners.
