Lyon to host Lorient in Ligue 1 midtable clash

Ninth-place Lyon are one point off eighth-place Lorient in the Ligue 1 standings ahead of Sunday’s match at the Groupama Stadium. Les Gones are on good form with five of their last six matches ending without defeat.

Lorient have been inconsistent of late, with just two of their last six fixtures ending as wins. Les Merlus picked up a mere seven points across the last six matches in the division, scoring seven goals and conceding seven times to opponents.

Lorient are looking for a second straight win over Lyon, however. The reverse fixture in Ligue 1 saw Les Merlus win 3-1 at home versus Lyon.

Enzo Le Fee opened the scoring in the sixth minute, but Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette levelled the score just before the half-hour mark. Terem Moffi restored Lorient’s lead on 33 minutes and Dango Ouattara put the game to bed early in the second half.

Lyon are unbeaten against Lorient in their last two matches at the Groupama Stadium. Les Gones will hope home-field advantage plays a major role in Sunday’s fixture.

Manager Laurent Blanc’s team is second in the current Ligue 1 form table. Lyon picked up 13 points from the last 18 points on offer. Les Gones scored 11 goals and conceded five times across the last six fixtures.

Lyon haven’t been great at home, but they do have a winning record of 6W-3D-3L at the Groupama Stadium. Lorient are on a three-match losing streak on the road. After a strong start to the campaign, Lorient crashed back to earth.

Blanc could be without several players for the match. Midfielder Thiago Mendes is a doubt due to a groin injury and defender Jerome Boateng could miss the game following a fitness problem.

Midfielder Houssem Aouar is a doubt following a knock. Lacazette has a thigh injury and will miss the match. Defender Malo Gusto is also a doubt following a hamstring strain.

Lorient manager Regis Le Bris will be without two players for Sunday’s match. Goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo has been ruled out with a tendon injury. Defender Julien Laporte has a knee injury and won’t be available until April.

Lyon’s form should continue Sunday at home against an inconsistent Lorient side. Les Gones may have some key players sidelined with injuries, but they should post a 2-0 win at full-time. Lorient’s current inconsistencies will see them lose for the ninth time this season in Ligue 1.
