Lionel Messi ‘tells Argentina team-mates he is retiring from international football’ after World Cup final heartbreak

Lionel Messi has reportedly decided to end his illustrious international career with Argentina after their agonising defeat by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

According to Argentine media, the 39-year-old captain informed his team-mates in the dressing room that the match had been his final appearance in the famous Albiceleste shirt, drawing the curtain on one of the greatest international careers in football history.

Emotional farewell after Spain defeat

Journalist Hernan Castillo reported on his official X account that Messi delivered a deeply emotional address to the squad immediately after the final whistle, confirming his decision to step away from international duty.

Castillo said Messi told the players that the World Cup final against Spain would be his last game for Argentina – a decision shared in a highly charged atmosphere, as the team came to terms with the shattering end to their bid to retain the world title.

The defeat denied Argentina back‐to‐back World Cup triumphs and ended Messi’s dream of closing his international journey with consecutive global crowns.

World Cup campaign of ‘what might have been’

Messi had gone into the 2026 tournament with a clear and singular ambition: to deliver an unprecedented second straight World Cup for Argentina and to further cement his place in football folklore.

He showcased some of his best football across the competition, scoring eight goals and providing four assists, driving Argentina’s run to the final and once again carrying much of the creative and goalscoring burden.

Despite his standout performances, Argentina fell short at the last hurdle, with Spain spoiling the script that many fans around the world had hoped to see written – Messi lifting the trophy one final time before walking away from the international stage.

From Barcelona icon to Inter Miami star

While his international career appears to have reached its conclusion, Messi continues to play at club level with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer in the United States.

He joined the Florida-based club after bringing to an end a legendary European chapter that spanned more than 20 years.

At Barcelona, Messi became the defining figure in the club’s modern history. He won 35 trophies with the Catalan side and scored more than 670 goals, establishing himself as their all-time leading scorer and a four-time Champions League winner.

Following his departure from Barcelona amid financial turmoil at the club, Messi moved to Paris Saint-Germain. Although his spell in France was relatively brief, he added two domestic league titles to his collection before opting for a new challenge in the United States.

Legacy with Argentina

Messi’s decision – if confirmed officially by the player or the Argentine Football Association – would mark the end of a remarkable era for the national team.

From his early days as a prodigious teenager through to captaining his country to global glory, he has been Argentina’s central figure for nearly two decades, carrying the expectations of a football‐obsessed nation.

The 2026 World Cup final loss to Spain, following his instrumental role in Argentina’s campaign, now appears set to be remembered not only as a missed opportunity for a second consecutive world title, but also as the final chapter of Messi’s storied international career.
