Laryea Kingston cautions Otto Addo against late squad changes before 2026 World Cup

Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has advised Otto Addo to rely on his current group of players as the Ghana national football team prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Some Ghanaian-born players playing abroad have recently been linked with a possible switch to represent Ghana ahead of the tournament.

Among the names mentioned are Callum Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah, who have been suggested as potential additions to the squad.

However, Kingston believes making changes close to the competition could disrupt the team’s preparation.

“To avoid distractions, it will be very good to maintain players that the coach already knows rather than bring in new players so close to a major tournament,” he told Graphic Sports.

The former midfielder stressed that understanding between the coach and his players is crucial when preparing for a major tournament.

“Fielding players that you don’t know tends to be torture because you are not sure what the player can do, and the player may also not know what you expect from him,” he said.

“So it’s very tough. Yes, they are Ghanaians, but we have to look at the contributions to the qualification.

“It’s always good to have a group of players that you believe in, monitor their progress, ensure they are getting minutes at their clubs and hitting top form when they come into the national team,” Kingston added.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L of the World Cup alongside Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.
