Inter Milan have completed the signing of Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones in a deal worth up to 35m euros (£30m), with the 25-year-old agreeing a contract with the Serie A champions until 2031.
Liverpool will receive an initial 30m euros (£25.7m), with a further 5m euros (£4.3m) available in add-ons. The Reds have also negotiated a 10% sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
“It’s a club that I’ve wanted to join for a while now so I’m excited,” Jones said.
“I’m a Scouse kid who came all the way through [at Liverpool] but I’m at a point now when I want to take the next step and I think this is the perfect club.”
Jones departs Liverpool after 16 years with the club, having joined their academy at the age of nine. He made 228 appearances for the first team after being handed his debut by Jurgen Klopp in 2019.
“After 16 years, it’s time to say goodbye,” he wrote on Instagram.
“This club is all I’ve ever known. I came here as a kid and I’m leaving as a man with a family of my own, which probably puts into perspective just how much of my life I’ve spent here.
“Liverpool will always be a massive part of me. I came here as a kid with a dream, and I’m leaving having lived it.”
The midfielder featured 49 times in all competitions last season, although only 18 of those appearances were starts in the Premier League. He found it difficult to establish himself as a regular in Arne Slot’s midfield.
Liverpool had valued Jones at about £35m, despite the academy graduate having only one year remaining on his contract. In June, they rejected a verbal offer of 25m euros (£21.7m) from Inter Milan.
The Premier League club later indicated that a package similar to the £30m deal Inter Milan agreed with Tottenham for Djed Spence would likely be enough to secure an agreement for Jones.
Inter Milan had first shown an interest in Jones during January, when they proposed a loan move with a view to a permanent transfer. Liverpool rejected that approach.
Jones is the third English player to join Inter Milan this summer, following John Stones and Spence. His move brings to an end a Liverpool career that began in the club’s youth system and included more than 200 senior appearances.
