Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah has made it clear that his side’s ambitions at AFCON 2025 stretch far beyond a respectable showing, following their narrow Group E victory over Equatorial Guinea.
The Falcons of Jediane secured a crucial 1–0 win at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday, breaking the deadlock in the 74th minute after a tense first half.
The result has boosted Sudan’s standing in the group and strengthened belief within the camp as the tournament progresses in Morocco.
“As I keep saying, it is not an easy task, but once you take part in a competition, the ambition is not to be part of the competition, or come out at the group stages,” he said.
“The ambition is how can I play well to make sure I win this competition.
“As at now, we did not start well, but the most important thing is to make sure we win our games, to make sure we win the AFCON. That is our aim.”
Appiah noted that the victory was vital in keeping Sudan firmly on course.
“We achieved what mattered most, and we are mindful of these objectives of reaching the furthest stage possible. We are not here to just participate,” he stressed.
Sudan will face Burkina Faso in their final group stage match with knockout spots at stake.
