In a night that celebrated the finest in Ghanaian football, James Kwesi Appiah stood tall; though in absence as he was named Men’s Coach of the Year at the 2025 Ghana Football Awards.
The honor, received on his behalf by Assistant Coach Ignatius Osei Fosu, recognizes Appiah’s remarkable transformation of Sudan’s national team and his growing stature as one of Africa’s top football minds.
Appiah’s recent coaching exploits have been nothing short of exceptional. Since taking charge of Sudan in 2023, the former Black Stars captain has turned the once-underperforming side into a competitive powerhouse.
In 2024 alone, Sudan won five out of six matches, conceded just one goal, and booked a spot at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco; clinched with a gritty draw against Angola in the final qualifier.

Sudan also tops their groups in both 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2025 AFCON qualifying campaigns, a testament to Appiah’s tactical nous and ability to instill discipline and cohesion in a squad previously overlooked in African football conversations.
Appiah’s work has drawn admiration far beyond Ghanaian borders. His name now features in the Best Male Coach category at the 2025 CAF Awards, set for December 16 in Morocco; evidence of the continental impact he is making.
His rise is rooted in decades of service to the sport. As a player, Appiah was part of Ghana’s golden generation, lifting the AFCON trophy.
As a coach, he made history as the first indigenous Ghanaian manager to qualify the Black Stars for the World Cup, guiding them to Brazil 2014. His earlier spells as assistant to Claude Le Roy and Milovan Rajevac also helped lay the groundwork for Ghana’s global football emergence.

Speaking at the awards, Assistant Coach Ignatius Osei Fosu said:
“This is more than an individual award; it’s a tribute to Coach Appiah’s vision, hard work, and belief in what’s possible. He is not just building a team in Sudan; he’s inspiring a continent.”
The 2025 Ghana Football Awards also recognized local and international stars like Thomas Partey, but it was Appiah’s story; one of persistence, reinvention, and triumph that stood out.
