Jurgen Klopp’s first appearance in a stadium since becoming Germany manager took an unusual turn during Bayern Munich’s 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, when he remained in the guest area at half-time alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Klopp was attending the match as the new coach of the Germany national team and was closely observing players who could feature in his plans. The fixture offered an early opportunity to assess a number of Germany internationals ahead of the team’s upcoming Nations League campaign.
Before kick-off, Klopp joined several prominent figures from German football for a meal. Among them were Merz, Bayern Munich chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen, and Borussia Dortmund officials Lars Ricken and Carsten Cramer.
The former Borussia Dortmund manager later moved to the stadium’s VIP area, where he sat next to Merz. Hans-Joachim Watzke, Klopp’s close friend and adviser as well as former Borussia Dortmund chief executive, and Rudi Voller, sporting director of the German Football Association, were also nearby. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf was seated close to them.
An unusual scene unfolded during the interval. While most of the guests left the box for the indoor areas, Klopp and Merz stayed in their seats, according to German newspaper Bild.
The decision was linked to the heightened security arrangements surrounding the German chancellor. Merz was accompanied by several security officers, and moving him to another part of the stadium during a 15-minute half-time break would have required additional routes and facilities to be secured. Remaining in place was therefore considered the simplest option.
Klopp’s decision to stay in the stands brought him far closer to supporters than would normally have been possible. Large numbers of fans gathered to take photographs with him and ask for autographs, and the former Liverpool manager responded patiently and warmly.
He signed supporters’ belongings, including a Bayern Munich shirt, as the crowd around him continued to grow. Organisers eventually brought in additional security staff to help manage the situation and keep the increasing number of fans under control.
Klopp also held occasional conversations with Merz during the match. One moment attracted particular attention when Klopp took out his phone and showed the chancellor something on its screen. Merz’s facial expression changed noticeably and he appeared visibly surprised.
Reports did not explain what Klopp had displayed on the phone, but Merz’s reaction made the exchange one of the most intriguing moments of the coach’s first public appearance as Germany manager.
Despite the social interest surrounding him, Klopp watched the match with clear concentration. He also met several familiar figures from his time at Borussia Dortmund, exchanging conversations and smiles with old friends.
The match marked the beginning of a new phase in Klopp’s career after he succeeded the previous Germany coaching staff. Expectations are high that he can return the national team to contention for major honours, while supporters are already looking ahead to his first decisions on player selection and the style of football he will adopt with the Mannschaft.
