Kenya’s fairytale debut at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) ended in heartbreak on Friday as Madagascar edged them 4-3 on penalties to book a semi-final spot.
Backed by a deafening Kasarani crowd, the Harambee Stars were chasing their first continental semi-final in 38 years. For a while, it looked possible.
Omija’s high and heartbreak
Defender Alphonce Omija put Kenya ahead just three minutes into the second half, rising above his marker to head home Boniface Muchiri’s cross and send the stadium into chaos.
Moments later, Ryan Ogam thought he had doubled the lead, but VAR ruled his effort out for a foul in the build-up ; a turning point.
Madagascar hit back in the 66th minute, Fenohasina Razafimaro calmly slotting a penalty past Byrne Omondi after Lewis Bandi’s handball.
Omija, who had given Kenya hope, would later miss from the spot in the shootout — a cruel twist in a night of fine margins.
Penalty drama
Kenya matched Madagascar blow for blow in the shootout, with Siraj Mohammed, Daniel Sakari, and Sylvester Owino converting their kicks. But Mike Kibwage’s effort was saved by Michel Ramandimbisoa, and Omija dragged his shot wide.
Toky Rakotondraibe then stepped up and buried the winning penalty, sealing a 4-3 victory and sparking wild celebrations for the Malagasy bench.
Kenya’s gallant run ends
It was a bitter finish to a historic campaign for Benni McCarthy’s men, who had topped a group featuring Morocco and DR Congo and conceded just twice in five games.
But a lack of cutting edge in front of goal proved costly at the business end of the tournament.
Madagascar march on
For Madagascar, the fairytale continues. Bronze medalists in 2022, they once again proved their resilience, with Ramandimbisoa enhancing his growing reputation as one of the tournament’s standout performers.
They now march into the semi-finals, while Kenya bow out with pride intact ; their spirited run suggesting this is just the beginning of a new era in Harambee Stars football.
