Former Black Stars assistant coach George Boateng has opened up on his time with Ghana’s senior national team, admitting the disappointment of consecutive early exits but maintaining pride in serving the country.
Boateng was part of the technical bench during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana exited at the group stage after recording one win and two defeats.
His stint continued into the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast under head coach Chris Hughton, where the Black Stars again failed to progress beyond the group phase.
The disappointing AFCON campaign saw Ghana finish without a single win, compounding frustrations around the team’s direction at the time.
“I worked with Otto Addo and Chris Hughton, but it was disappointing that we could not qualify from the group phase of the World Cup and the AFCON. Working for Ghana was an honour,” he told Premier League Production.
“I always feel I owe Ghana something because I could not play for them, and so when I had the opportunity to work as an assistant coach, I was honoured,” he added.
Following the AFCON setback, Ghana’s technical team was dissolved, paving the way for Otto Addo’s eventual return.
