Former Black Stars assistant coach George Boateng has opened up about his time working with Ghana’s senior national team, describing the opportunity as a deeply personal honour.
Boateng joined the Black Stars’ technical team under Otto Addo ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff against Nigeria.
Although born in Ghana, Boateng represented the Netherlands during his playing career, a factor that made his coaching role with the Black Stars even more meaningful.
Reflecting on that experience, he explained the emotional connection behind his decision to serve the country.
“I always feel I owe Ghana something because I could not play for them, and so when I had the opportunity to work as an assistant coach, I was honoured,” he told Premier League Production.
Despite the pride, Boateng admitted frustration over Ghana’s early exits at both the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
“I worked with Otto Addo and Chris Hughton, but it was disappointing that we could not qualify from the group phase of the World Cup and the AFCON. Working for Ghana was an honour,” Boateng added.
Boateng eventually stepped down from his role after the 2023 AFCON, bringing his chapter with the Black Stars to a close.
