I am sorry – Referee Franklin Akumatey apologizes to Asante Kotoko fans after wrong penalty call

Referee Franklin Akumatey has apologized to Asante Kotoko after a wrong penalty decision.

In the matchday 13 games, the Porcupine Warriors were hosted at the DUN’s Park against Bibiani Gold Stars.

Having taken the lead against the home side through Uganda international Steven Mukwala, Akumetey awarded Gold Stars a non-existent penalty some few minutes later.

Yahaya Dramani scored from the spot kick to give Bibiani Gold Stars the equalizer.

But replays after the game showed the ball should have gone for a foul against Bibiani Gold Stars instead of a penalty.

The referee after consultations with his assistant line II stuck to his call for the penalty against Asante Kotoko.

However, speaking in an interview, Akumatey has apologized to the Kotoko fraternity for his decision.

According to him, he had his decision wrong and wish he had VAR.

“I’m very sorry to all Asante Kotoko people,” he told Kumasi-based Kessben FM.

“It was a human error. I needed help and wish I had VAR,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association [GFA] Match Review Panel have announced that they will review the game.
