Tuesday 7.45pm: Ireland v Switzerland
Friendly match at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin
TV: Virgin Media Two & Viaplay

Under 2.5 goals

Neither Ireland nor Switzerland have scored a whole lot of goals in recent games.

Both sides were involved in 0-0 draws on Saturday evening, with Ireland claiming a credible tie against Belgium and Switzerland drawing against Denmark.

Two games against Gibraltar aside, Ireland have not scored more than one goal in any game in over a year and have scored just three goals in their last eight games against non-Gibraltararian opposition.

Switzerland, meanwhile, have failed to score in each of their last two internationals and have scored just twice in their last four.

Interim Ireland manager John O’Shea appears to have adopted a do-not-lose approach and it’s hard to see Tuesday’s friendly becoming a goal-fest.

Over 12 Ireland fouls

Ireland averaged roughly 11 fouls per game in Euro qualifying last year and matched that average in Saturday’s clash with Belgium. They may well go one better against the Swiss on Tuesday, especially if the Swiss are as aggressive as they have been recently.

Ireland will likely be without the ball for much of Tuesday’s meeting and may be forced to foul on certain occasions. Switzerland have forced exactly ten fouls per game in their last five internationals, but that number could jump up slightly at the Aviva.

Adam Idah to have one of more shots on target

Adam Idah only featured off the bench on Saturday, but given his form at Celtic and Evan Ferguson’s recent struggles, there is a good chance he will start against the Swiss.

Idah enjoyed a relatively successful 2023, scoring three times (all in games at the Aviva). He has scored an even more impressive five goals in seven games since joining Celtic in January and is arguably Ireland’s most dangerous player at present.

Idah averages 2.6 shots per game at Celtic Park and may cause problems for the Swiss defence. He is decent value to find the target at least once.

Sammie Szmodics to have 1 or more Shots on Target

Sammie Szmodics made a lively debut against Belgium last Saturday evening. We were back to the glory days of ‘big man, little man, shot’ football. Granted, none of us want to live there permanently but a bit of nostalgia is nice now and again. You can’t argue with Szmodics heroics for Blackburn this season, he’s simply been outstanding and against a Swiss defence that aren’t known for their defensive abilites, we like the chances of him landing at least one Shot on Target.

Xherdan Shaqiri to have 1 or more Shots on Target

Former Bayern Munich and Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri should see some action in Dublin on Tuesday night. He came on against Denmark in the friendly match on Saturday and could even start as the Swiss may target Ireland’s flanks in counter attacking moves. He’s still doing the business for Chicago Fire since moving there in 2022 and with a shots per game average of 1.7 for the national side, we reckon he’ll be eager to test Caoimhín Kelleher reactions between the Irish sticks.
