It is a battle of two newly-promoted teams in La Liga on Friday night. Girona will welcome Real Valladolid to the Estadi Montilivi on Friday night in a six-point affair between two sides desperate to remain in Spain’s top flight.

Of the two newly-promoted clubs, Girona have started better off. Los Rojiblancos are 12th in the league with four points from 12 points on offer in La Liga. Manager Michel has watched the team struggle in the final third with just four goals scored.The defence has conceded just four times, however.

Real Valladolid are 16th in the standings, and like Girona, they have picked up four points from 12 points available. Los Blanquivioletas have scored a mere two goals and conceded eight times in La Liga this term.

Matchday No. 4 saw Real Valladolid secure their first win in La Liga this campaign thanks to a 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Almeria. Los Blanquivioletas were able to win last weekend’s six-point match with Almeria. Now, manager Pacheta needs Los Blanquivioletas to do it once more versus Girona.

Girona and Real Valladolid have yo-yoed between the top-flight and second division of Spanish football in recent seasons.

Between 2016 and 2022, these teams met six times in La Liga and La Liga 2. The matches were divided into two wins apiece, two draws, and two losses apiece.

Last season Girona and Real Valladolid met twice in the Segunda with the former going unbeaten.

Girona picked up a 1-0 win at home versus Valladolid before the teams drew 2-2 at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla in the second match.

Three different goal-scorers have found the back of the net for Girona this season. Summer signing Valentin Castellanos has scored one goal. Castellanos was Girona’s big signing.

The centre-forward is valued at nearly £11 million and joined from New York City FC on loan. NYCFC and Girona are part of the City Football Group which made it possible for the Spanish side to sign the striker.

Real Valladolid’s two goals have been shared by forwards Shon Weissman and Anuar.

Pacheta’s team is struggling for goals, but Los Blanquivioletas will need to find more consistency in the final third if they plan to stave off relegation.

Five players could miss the game for Girona including striker Cristhian Stuani, Ramon Terrats, Yangel Herrera, Borja Garcia, and Ibrahima Kebe. Real Valladolid manager Michel has no new injury issues ahead of the Friday night fixture.

Girona went unbeaten in two matches versus Real Valladolid last season. The last three matches played at the Estadi Montilivi versus Valladolid. Girona should post a win at full-time with Real Valladolid once again struggling to score. Los Rojiblancos should win 2-0.
