President John Dramani Mahama has pledged his commitment to transparency in sports funding, particularly when it comes to national teams.
Mahama stressed that the Ghana Football Association must disclose the budget for the Black Stars, as it involves taxpayers’ money.
He instructed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to hold the GFA accountable regarding the team’s budget.
In his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, President John Dramani Mahama said “Next month, the senior national team, the Black Stars, now a pale shadow of their former glory will be in action.
“I have instructed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to hold the GFA accountable, particularly regarding the team’s budget. There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national team.
“The budget presented by the FA and other associations must be made public, as it is taxpayers’ money,” he stated.
The move towards transparency is significant, especially considering the Black Stars’ upcoming matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. They are set to face Chad on March 21 and Madagascar on March 24.
