Ghana have been denied a bronze medal in the men’s 4x100m relay at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after Canada successfully appealed against its disqualification, restoring the original finishing order.
The ruling moved Canada back into second place and saw Ghana drop from the medal positions to fourth. Australia retained the gold medal, while Nigeria were awarded bronze.
Ghana had initially been promoted to third after both Canada and South Africa were disqualified following baton exchange infringements. Their revised results temporarily put the Ghanaian quartet on course for a bronze medal.
The team included Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, Abdul Rasheed Saminu and a fourth teammate. Their elevation to third had raised the possibility of Ghana securing its only track and field medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
However, officials later upheld Canada’s appeal, overturning the earlier disqualification and returning the North American side to second place. With Canada restored to the podium, the medal positions were revised once again.
Australia remained champions, Canada took silver and Nigeria moved into third. Ghana were consequently placed fourth, ending their hopes of a relay medal despite their initial promotion.
The decision is a significant disappointment for Ghana, whose relay team had appeared to have secured the country’s only medal in athletics at the Games. The change in classification came not because of a new race result, but because of the successful challenge to the ruling over Canada’s baton exchange.
Canada’s reinstatement also meant that South Africa’s earlier disqualification continued to affect the final order, while Ghana lost the bronze position it had briefly occupied after the post-race decisions.
Despite missing out on a medal, Ghana’s quartet were praised for their performance in the relay. Their showing has established them as one of the country’s standout athletics teams at the Games, even though the official results now place them just outside the podium.
The final standings leave Ghana fourth in the men’s 4x100m relay, behind Australia, Canada and Nigeria. What had initially appeared to be a bronze-medal finish instead ended with Ghana narrowly missing out after the review process was completed.
