Former Ghana international Kwesi Appiah is optimistic about Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup but stresses that resolving the team’s captaincy issues is crucial to success.
According to Appiah, who led Ghana to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, a unified team will emerge once the captaincy conundrum is addressed, leading to improved performances during the qualifiers.
Reports in the media suggest that Jordan Ayew has taken over as captain, replacing Thomas Partey, who has stepped down as first deputy captain.
“If they’re able to sort the captaincy issue then it’s okay, because the players we have are quality and then we make sure there’s no division in the team.
Without unity we cannot achieve anything so I hope and pray that Ghana will qualify for the World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Alexander Djiku is set to assume the role of first deputy captain.
The Black Stars will face Chad and Madagascar this month in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
